February 27th 2007 Check out the new video from the 2006 season.
September 30th 2006 finally, we got ourselves together and the pictures from the lisboa downtown race are now available on the albums page. also, the pictures from the last race in denmark dhcup in vejle are online - mostly videos though.
the last race of the season for me is coming up in one week exactly, in rudeskov near copenhagen. i'm gonna kick some ass.
August 06th 2006 there are new pictures on the albums page from the third race of the iceland cup championship series, held in grundarfjörður iceland on the 26th of july 2006. some of the pictures are a bit out of focus but i put them in ayway. the race was supposed to be up by the glacier but due to fog and weather the race was held in the mountainside just above the town of grundarfjörður. the race itself was interesting i got a good stable first run and managed to decrease my time and win the race by almost three seconds. a nice short track with multiple terrain and a nice price ceremoni in front of all the people at the town festival.
May 29th 2006 well the frame held for one more race. this weekend i went to the third race in the danish downhill cup in ruehed odense. i had an excellent day, it was great meeting all the danish riders again and a really sweet feeling being at the top of the podium at the end of the day after an interesting competition with mads for the first place. thanks to all the people and the organizers, and to fox for all the good rewards. my amazing girlfriend managed to work our crappy camera and took some pictures and video clips for you to look at. i am off planning the next trip, i hope i will be able to go to willingen, germany to race and from there i will be going to iceland to race the first race in the icelandic championships next week.
May 15th 2006 picking up from last time.. the morning after i went to the airport to meet up with the guys from the g-cross honda team. first i met up with a couple of guys from the big air training camp and returned my rental car before the guys from the honda team came to pick us up. then we drove to porto de mos where they held the training camps. we got a three room apartment that i shared with two other guys.
the training camp was really great, the honda guys trained with us. i was really impressed with their junior riders rubin garcia and junior nagata. unfortunately i managed to break a bolt that holds the rear shock on my bike and i did not realize until too late so when i finally stopped, the back end of the frame had some cracked welds. thank god i was able to move the shock to a different setting that minimized the pressure on the cracked area so the frame would hold for the lissbon downtown race. greg is a really down-to-earth nice guy, and all the guys from the g-cross team are the best at what they do.
after two days of training in porto de mos, we drove to lissbon to get ready for the downtown race. we drove in three cars and got a bit lost and the driver i was riding with kind of panicked after we drove over a big bridge to the other side of the river from lissbon and did not want to follow the leading car any more causing us to also loose the car behind us a few minutes later. then we drove around in suspicious areas until we found an old lady that could tell us the way back to the highway. and then finally after getting lost a couple of more times again we caught up with the other guys at the downtown race area.
we walked the track with greg. the track was really slippery and tricky all the way through. after getting something to eat we went to the hotel where all the racing teams stayed. we checked in and took a swim in the hotel pool and lay in the sun for a while. at the evening we ate at the hotel restaurant and we got the worst service possible. some had finished the desert when other were getting their half cooked steaks, but somehow we managed to stay calm through two and a half hour of terrible service, misunderstandings and half cooked food which actually tasted really good when they eventually managed to get it to us.
on race day we got picked up by official race shuttle cars, everybody were divided up to groups, had their name and national flag on the cars so we would know which car was whos. of course they managed to put the finnish flag with my name, instead of the icelandic one... then for the first year they put a big jump half way down the track which was a bit too much for my broken frame, so i had to take the chicken run around it. we all got four training runs and a qualifying run where 25 out of 40 get through to the actual race. i got a very good run in qualification but managed to skid out and get my bars stuck in the rails in the second last corner. i still finished with a respectable time of 2:03 minutes, just missing out of the 1:53 i needed to qualify. the race itself was very exciting. me and the guys from the training camp just our shirts off and walked around bare chested, enjoying the sun which was beginning to agree with my extremely white skin tone. steve peat won of course for the fifth time in a row after an exciting race that seemed to be a duel between him and cedric garcia. genious riding from all those guys.
after the race we went back to the hotel to shine up a bit and then back downtown to a really cool restaurant. unfortunately the hotel was pretty far from the city center and i had to fly back to denmark early sunday morning, so i went to bed early that night after a very tiring trip.
May 08th 2006 after a trip to the spanish version of wallmart, helgi was ready for the road trip to lisboa today. it only took about four hours to drive down there, so he had plenty time to find a hotel room and test the city for some riding. he even had time to sit down in some castle to read a portuguese mountainbike magazine, where to his surprise he found his own name! the bike magazine had listed all the participants in the lisboa downtown race.
besides that, helgi has told me about some wild and crazy parties that the riders have been attending the last few days in vigo. the biggest one of course being last night. some well known riders apparently got arrested by the spanish police (for no criminal reasons of course) and there was something about fire extinguishers being emptied under the doors of hotel rooms... what can i say... boys will be boys.
May 07th 2006 the training on friday went well. helgi didn't take the last jump on the course on friday - a road gap with four meter free fall - but saturday morning he did, of course without problems.
the qualifications were on saturday, and helgi was not able to qualify. the riders were started with a thirty second interval and when he was two thirds down the course, he got stuck behind the one who was in front of him... that is just so anoying, because he could have gotten a lot better time. but that is also a part of the game, i suppose. he took the track in three minutes nine seconds (3:09) and ended up at around hundred and sixty he thought. the top eighty made it on to the finals today, so helgi is enjoying the good life in spain and relaxing today, watching the finals.
helgi has a long day tomorrow, where he will be driving from spain to portugal to continue on to the second part of his journey.
May 04th 2006 this is the girlfriend with the latest updates from spain. helgi arrived yesterday and everything went well. no lost baggage and the rental car and the hotel were all where they were supposed to be.
today helgi went out to the track, walked it up and down and it's looking good. It is a technical course, but a really fast one with smooth jumps and corners. helgi met greg minnaar, martin whitely and some more of the worlds top riders today. he even met the guy who will be cooking for them at the big air training camps next week.
tomorrow morning they will be training on the track for the first time and i will bring you more specifics on the track then.
May 02nd 2006 tomorrow i am going to vigo spain to ride the first world cup race of the season. this is going to be a training race to get experience, don't misunderstand me i'll go as fast as i can, but i won't take any big chances. also it turned out that i didn't get the new sponsor bike in time, so i will be riding my old reliable gray orange. well i'm off packing the rest of my stuff. more updates tomorrow.
April 29th 2006 well, haven't written anything since i was in göteborg. the race didn't go exactly as planned. i didn't get a very good first run and then it started raining just before my second run so i had a small crash and didn't better my time. but i got thirteenth place anyway with the time of 1:26,46. the best time in my class was 01:17,04 and the overall best time was 01:15,70. that was okay for a season warm up race.
April 17th 2006 i went to göteborg on saturday to train on the track we're riding next weekend. it's the first race in the swedish downhill cup and for me it's a warm up race for the season. me and my girlfriend arrived in göteborg around eight o’clock, got a room at a nice bed and breakfast place, actually called nice bed and breakfast. i didn't find the track before dark so we went a bit down town in the evening göteborg is a really really nice city. got an early morning on sunday, i was up at the track just after 12 after a sightseeing trip around the city. after about an hour three swedish guys came and i trained with them a bit. too bad i had my maxxis minions 60a on, they weren’t that suitable for the trail that was fairly muddy. next weekend i'll probably have mud tires or high rollers on. around five o'clock we started cruising back to copenhagen. we had a nice trip, taking the ferry from helsingborg to helsingor. all around a successful trip and training except for one funny crash when i hit the brakes a bit too late. check it out, it's the second video down on the list of videos from göteborg. it's hilarious.
April 11th 2006 went riding in rudeskov today, met jesper, got some videos, available on this page.
only one month to world cup, i got the international license in the post a week ago along with a letter with
the permission to race the world cup races from the danish cycling union. officially, a license to race. i'm
so looking forward to it and i have been training a lot. i'm in good shape. thank god.
April 09th 2006 just finished the race clinic weekend training with jan baltesen. it rained all weekend and the wind didn't stop
blowing. i still managed to jump a few jumps with the sidewind. it was nice to get out on the bmx again. it
was really refreshing in the rain.
March 26th 2006 just got back from jylland - aalborg and hobro, where i went riding with my good friend rasmus redding, who will be riding
the danish championships on a hardtail this upcoming season. we took some videos which you can hopefully download and view
on the videos page. nothing extreme, just some playing around. if you have problems viewing the videos even after following the
doesn't work instructions, pls let me know and i'll get the system updated.
as i am now getting in shape for the season, i expect to keep this page a bit more active. the first race of this summer will be
the uci world cup, vigo spain in may - followed by the big air training camp in portugal with greg minnaar that ends with
the lisbon downtown race. i can't wait!
January 09th 2006 happy new year it's time for an update. not much has happened since last time, i am still preparing for next season where i expect to participate in 7 races in the danish championship and some more races in iceland and in europe. i am always onthe lookout for sponsors and good ideas, so do not hesitate to contact me if you can contribute. until next time...
Oktober 06th 2005 the danish champion title is mine now, after i won the last race in rudeskov on the 24th of september.
September 05th 2005 here are some pictures from last weekend - a race held in rue hede odense DK. must say that this is probably the best track in denmark, a great effort made by the local riders. thanks for a fantastic race and a delightfull get-together afterwards.
soon you will be able to find more photos here, e.g. from previous races this year, and of course we will keep on shooting at the race in rudeskov - the seasons last dh race, on the 24th of september. so tune in regularly, ik'?
